In the summer of 1999, Elston "Jay" Joyner had a $200 loan and a dream to build the most successful battery business in Fort Lauderdale. Today, he is very close to making his dream a reality.
Joyner is the owner of Battery Express, Inc., a battery retail, wholesale, service and installation business located at 1932 NW 9th Street in the City's CRA district.
When Joyner started the company, it was a one man operation on his mother's patio. Eight years later, Battery Express has grown into one of the community's leading businesses, featuring a fleet of service trucks and major accounts including the Port Everglades Public Works Department and Broward County Fleet Services.
Battery Express features a trademark BEX battery line that includes sealed lead acid, lithium, nickel cadmium, and deep cycle batteries. In addition, the line includes automotive, fleet, marine, industrial and emergency back-up batteries.
As the only African-American owned battery company in Florida, Joyner is positioning Battery Express to dominate the local battery market. He is expanding his distribution network and marketing the BEX battery line as a superior product available at a lower price than his competitors. Joyner's hard work is paying off as Battery Express continues to secure high profile accounts throughout South Florida.
This family-owned and operated business has come along way since the days when Joyner operated on his mother's patio. But through it all, the company has continued to provide a quality product at an affordable price. In fact, Battery Express still provides roadside assistance and offers customers automotive batteries starting at $45.00 with exchange and a 90-day warranty.
